1) What were you like as a young adult?
First, let me say that writing this is stepping WAY out of my comfort zone. I do a much better job talking and always have. As a young adult, I always loved the opportunities that were brought my way to share the love of God. I really didn’t think about it, I just did it. No second thoughts, I just was. The Church community and singing were my life and I had aspirations of full-time music ministry: traveling, recording, and sharing God’s love.
I was fortunate to be surrounded by Godly friends and family.
2) What was one memorable challenge that you faced as a young adult and how did you overcome it?
I auditioned for several Christian ministries and was accepted be part of a large TV evangelical program to sing in their traveling ensemble. It looked as though I was going to be able to make a career of music ministry. However, the heart of the organization was not what the TV cameras showed.
After a big investment in the opportunity, I was cut and 4 days later, on my 18th birthday, I found myself flying home. I felt like I had let God, my family, and my church down. I didn’t overcome this quickly. It was only several years later that I could see that God had protected me from the scandals and corruption. It was not a ministry, it was industry.
3) What is one piece of advice that every young adult needs to hear?
“Not by might, not by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord” ~ Zechariah 4:6b
Wherever you are, it is not a surprise to God. He is your Father and infinitely powerful to bless you and overcome circumstances. One day, faith becomes sight and we see God’s plan.
4) Share a practical tip, resource, or recipe that every young adult should know?
Don’t use credit cards. If you can’t afford to pay cash, you can’t afford it.
